How Much Does an AI Receptionist Cost for a Contractor?
Price a real month of calls before choosing a plan.

A missed call while you are on a roof, under a sink or driving between jobs can become a missed opportunity. Before buying an AI receptionist, measure how often that happens and what your existing callback process recovers. Then compare the cost of handling those calls with a defined service level.
AI receptionist prices are not directly comparable until you know the billing unit, included usage and required base software. This guide separates monthly plans, overages, setup and human fallback so a contractor can price a realistic month of calls.
How much does an AI receptionist cost per month?
Among the named vendors checked on October 17, 2026, Goodcall lists a $79 monthly Starter plan, Frontdesk lists $99 monthly or $79 per month billed annually, and Smith.ai lists a free 25-call tier plus a $150 monthly Pro tier. These are selected examples, not the minimum or typical price for the whole market.
| Service | Published entry option checked Oct 17, 2026 | Included basis | Usage / other charges |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goodcall | Starter $79/month | 100 unique customers/month | Then $0.79 per additional unique customer |
| Frontdesk | Business-in-a-Box $99/month; $79/month billed annually | 200 voice minutes; other channels have their own allowances | 25 credits ($0.25) per extra minute; monthly pool and auto-reload terms apply |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist | Free: $0; Pro: $150/month | Free 25 calls; entry Pro 75 calls | Free overage $3/call; entry Pro overage $2.50/call |
| HighLevel AI Employee | Growth $50 or Unlimited $97 per enabled location/month | Growth: 100 shared Voice AI minutes; Unlimited: fair-use coverage | Existing HighLevel subscription and separate Phone System charges; Growth overage is usage-based |
| Jobber Receptionist | Confirm price with the current Jobber plan/quote | Check calls, texts, booking and required Jobber access | Price not independently established in this review |
Prices change often, so check before you buy. Treat this table as a snapshot, not a quote.
What's included, and what costs extra?
The monthly plan is only part of the bill. Ask about each of these before you sign:
| Cost item | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Overage | What happens in your busiest month? Spring for roofers and HVAC, move-out season for cleaners. |
| Phone number | Can it use your existing number through call forwarding, or do you need a new one? |
| Setup | Who writes the call script, your services list and the booking rules? Is that included or billed? |
| Booking | Can it book into your real calendar or scheduling software, or does it only take messages? |
| CRM connection | Does every call land in your CRM as a lead with a transcript, or in a separate inbox? |
| Human backup | Can urgent or difficult calls go to a person, and what does that cost? |
Per minute, per call or per caller: which billing fits?
The billing unit matters more than the starting price.
Pull last month's call log before you choose. Count total calls, average call length and repeat callers, then price each plan against those numbers instead of the advertised tier.
AI receptionist vs answering service vs hiring someone
| Option | Cost basis to compare | Strengths | Weak spots |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI receptionist | Subscription plus measured usage, setup and fallback | Can cover routine intake and scheduling when configured and tested | Emotional or unusual calls, emergencies need careful routing |
| Live answering service | Provider quote based on call/minute allowances | Human conversation; verify domain training and booking support | Verify volume pricing, training, availability and booking scope |
| In-house receptionist | Salary, payroll costs, coverage and management | Can develop detailed business knowledge with training and support | Coverage depends on staffing; include absence and peak-call plans |
Compare the options against your actual calls. AI may be suitable for routine intake and scheduling, while a human service may handle unusual or sensitive conversations better. Test emergency escalation, calendar accuracy and fallback when the system cannot resolve the request before choosing a service.
Are AI receptionists worth it?
Use a scenario to test the economics, then replace every assumption with your own measurements. Revenue is not profit, a missed call is not automatically a lost customer, and an answered call is not automatically a booking.
Illustrative scenario: 20 unanswered calls, half from potential customers, a 40% conversion rate if you reach them, and $500 of gross revenue per completed job. These are invented planning inputs, not observed results.
- 20 calls × 50% potential customers = 10 possible sales conversations.
- 10 conversations × 40% assumed conversion = 4 potential jobs.
- 4 potential jobs × $500 = $2,000 of hypothetical gross-revenue opportunity, before delivery costs or customers already recovered by callbacks.
If the new service produced one additional completed $500 job, compare that job's contribution after labor and materials with the full monthly system cost. Include setup, usage, follow-up and your review time. Do not assume every nominal booking is incremental revenue.
Booking is one useful outcome, but accurate messages and faster callbacks can also have value. Measure completed jobs, response time, errors and customer experience rather than judging the service only by calls answered.
What's different for contractors and cleaning companies?
Contractors should test routing for urgent situations and specify when a person must take over. The intake can collect service area, job type, scope and timing, but it should not give hazardous instructions or imply that a contractor has accepted an emergency before someone confirms it.
For a cleaning business, useful intake fields might include property size, service frequency and whether the work is residential or commercial. Configure the actual booking rules and test repeat-customer handling. Follow-up can support repeat work, but recurring revenue is not an automatic result of answering a call.
Built into your CRM, or standalone?
A CRM-connected receptionist can start a follow-up workflow if the integration, consent and triggers are configured correctly. Test that the right lead, calendar and message are created, and that existing customers do not receive duplicate or inappropriate follow-ups.
That's how we build them at Rhize: the voice agent is one part of a connected system for getting and keeping customers, set up inside the CRM the business already uses. If you want to see how answering, booking and follow-up fit into the bigger picture, read what a business operating system is.
