What Is Claude Code? A Plain-English Guide for Business Owners

Claude Code is an AI assistant from Anthropic that works inside your computer instead of a chat window. Where regular Claude can only talk, Claude Code can do: read and organize files, run programs, connect to your business tools, and finish multi-step work you'd normally do by hand.

What is Claude Code?
Claude Code is the version of Claude that has hands. Regular Claude gives you advice; Claude Code opens the folder, does the work, and shows you the result.
Here's the difference in one job. Say you've got 400 client files in a folder — inconsistent names, duplicates, half of them missing follow-ups. Regular Claude can tell you how to clean that up. Claude Code can actually do it: rename the files to one convention, flag the duplicates, cross-check who never got a follow-up, and draft the emails — while you do something better with the hour.
Chat gives you a plan. Claude Code gives you the finished work.
What's a terminal, and why does Claude Code live there?
The terminal is the text-only way to talk to your computer — a plain window where you type instructions instead of clicking buttons. It's been on every Mac and PC for decades, and Claude Code runs inside it.
Think of it as the service entrance versus the lobby. The lobby — your normal apps and icons — is polished, but you can only go where the doors are. The service entrance is plain, but it reaches every floor of the building. Claude Code uses the service entrance because that's where a worker can actually work: touch the files, run the programs, get to everything.
And here's the part that matters: you don't have to learn terminal commands. You type plain English — "organize these invoices by month and total each one" — and Claude Code handles the machinery. The terminal is where it works, not a language you have to speak.
Isn't it just for developers?
No — the "code" in the name is the engine, not the use case. Under the hood, Claude Code gets things done by writing and running small bits of code. But you don't see that, the same way you don't watch your accountant's spreadsheet formulas. You see the sorted files and the finished report.

If you take one thing from this table: you don't pick one forever. Most owners start in chat, meet a task chat can't finish, and that's the day Claude Code earns its spot.
What does it cost?

- Pick one real task first. Not "explore AI" — a specific job you already resent. The folder that needs sorting. The report you rebuild by hand monthly.

- Point it at the task in plain English. Describe the job like you'd brief a capable new hire. It asks before doing anything meaningful — you approve each step until you trust it.
